The Agency Loop: why reclaiming agency is your missing piece
If wellness feels more overwhelming than empowering these days, you’re not imagining it.
Many women, like you, are doing all the right things: following experts, saving posts, listening to podcasts, trying to keep up with the latest advice. And yet, instead of feeling clearer or healthier, they feel confused, fatigued, and oddly stuck. Recognise that feeling?
This isn’t a failure of motivation or discipline.
It’s a failure of agency.

When wellness is led by the algorithm
Much of today’s wellness information reaches us through algorithms that are specifically designed to maximise our attention. That means they prioritise novelty, emotional pull and engagement, not relevance to us personally, not ‘right timing’, or ‘best fit’.
The result is a constant stream of advice, often contradictory, often urgent, and rarely contextualised. When we’re exposed to too much information, too quickly, the natural sequence of change breaks down. Choice turns into reaction. Discernment gives way to decision fatigue.
We consume more, but we act less.
Over time, wellness becomes something we scroll through rather than something that we practise.
(You’re with me, I know!)
Reclaiming agency changes the sequence
Real, sustainable change works very differently. It doesn’t start with information. It starts with our noticing.
This insight sits at the very heart of my work, and it’s why I use a framework that I have called The Agency Loop.
The Agency Loop describes the natural, human process through which meaningful change actually happens - before algorithms get involved.
The Agency Loop
At its simplest, the loop looks like this:
An internal signal is noticed
This might be low energy, poor sleep, rising stress, physical discomfort, or simply a sense that something feels “off”. (🙋♀️ - all women over 40…)Conscious attention follows
There’s a pause. Curiosity replaces urgency. Instead of fixing, we notice.Information is sought selectively
Not everything - not looking for a deluge of info, just what’s relevant to us here and now. Information becomes a tool, not a flood.Discernment is applied
Fewer choices. Better fit. What’s realistic and achievable rather than ideal and, errrm… not.A small, chosen action is taken
Achievable means doable, and so we DO. We take action. Sustainable beats dramatic. Consistency beats intensity.Reflection and feedback occur
And then we ask ourselves: did that help? What shifted? What didn’t?Adjustment is made
The approach evolves based on our unique, lived experience, not external pressure.Self-trust grows
Confidence comes not from getting it “right”, but from learning how to choose.
And then the loop begins again. And we up-spiral and grow…
Because this is wellness as a skill - not a performance.

Why agency matters more than information
The key difference between overwhelm and progress isn’t effort. It’s order.
When agency comes first, information supports change.
When information comes first, agency erodes.
Reclaiming agency doesn’t mean rejecting expertise, science, or even social media. You still get to watch reels of pets and home reno projects! But it does mean restoring the right hierarchy. So that’s:
Agency before information
Discernment before action
Practice before consumption
When that order is restored, wellness becomes calmer, clearer, and far more sustainable.
A quieter, more human approach to change
The Agency Loop isn’t about doing more. It’s about choosing better.
It invites us to step out of reaction mode and back into relationship with our own bodies, lives, and priorities. To trust that small, thoughtful actions, repeated and refined, are enough.
In a world that constantly tells women what they should be doing, reclaiming agency is practically a radical act. It’s an act of defiance against the numbing of wellness for profit, against commoditised wellness, against accepting the status quo.
It’s a determination to re-connect to our individual wisdom, to collaborate with the knowledge that we need, and commit to our own growth.
And that’s where real wellbeing begins.
